We camp in all kinds of weather and you must stay warm and dry. Staying warm requires the appropriate coats and jackets as you normally use. When backpacking, you can save weight by taking several light layers and put on as many or as few layers as you need. Take a long-sleeved t-shirt, a sweater and either a windbreaker or light jacket. You may need to take layers off when exerting yourself, such as hiking.
You need to be dry to be warm. There are many ways to keep dry. A poncho is a traditional Scout raincoat. It can be draped over a backpack, but can be dangerous in windy conditions and has many places to leak. A better solution is a rainsuit. Separate tops and bottoms allow free movement and keep the rain off you and out of your boots. You will need a separate pack cover, but this will keep your backpack drier than a poncho would.
I always keep a disposable poncho with me, even when camping in dry weather. In a pinch, a plactic trash bag can be cut and used as a makeshift poncho.
