Troop 990 History

Founded in the "Ninth Month of the Ninetieth Year" (September 1990), Troop 990 is a Boy Scout Troop in the Westlake community of Austin, Texas. We are sponsored by The Knights of Columbus at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Troop 990 prides itself in being a Scout-run Troop, where the decisions and plans are made by the Scouts with the guidance but not interference of the adults, giving the Scouts a unique experience and teaching them valuable lessons of life.

1990	Chris Kappmeyer founded the Troop as our first Scoutmaster.
1993	Attended National Jamboree. Brian S. became 990's first Eagle Scout in August.
1994	Frank Scofield became Scoutmaster. 990 wins Top Troop at Camporee in January 1995.
1995	990 wins Top Troop at Camporee in January 1996 for the second straight year, the only Troop to accomplish this. Eagle Scouts Scott L., Fred N.
1996	Eagle Scouts James S., Travis B.
1997	Baxter Gentry became Scoutmaster. 990 wins Top Troop at Camporee for an unprecedented third time in January 1998. Attended National Jamboree. Eagle Scouts Philip C., Ronan M.
1998	990 wins Top Troop at Camporee for the fourth time in January 1999. Eagle Scouts Adam S., Tommy H., Mark S.
1999	990 wins Top Troop at Camporee for the fifth time in January 2000. Eagle Scouts David B. Sean G., John S., Reid S., Michael H.
2000	Ted Linder became Scoutmaster. Eagle Scouts Carl S., Austin S., Michael R.
2001	Attended National Jamboree and Philmont. 990 wins Top Troop at Camporee for the sixth time in January 2002. Eagle Scouts Roy M., Zach T., Ryan M., Zachary S., Niles H., Charlie H., Bill B.
2002	Eagle Scouts Brian S., Mark G., James S., Carl L., Chris M., David B., Kenny R., Chris E. The Longhorn District Camporee discontinues the Top Troop award.
2003	Kim Eckert became Scoutmaster. Eagle Scouts Michael R., Britton C., Baxter G., Kamal G., Mark H., Nicholas S., Andrew H., John Michael F.
2004	Weminuche/Spanish Peaks summer adventure. Eagle Scouts Stephen P., Ted H., Kevin S., Will P., Andrew L., Justin L., Decker G., Rory O., Tim S., Andrew K.
2005	Attended National Jamboree and Philmont. The Longhorn District Camporee brings back the Top Troop award and 990 wins it again in January 2006! 2006	Pat Sullivan became Scoutmaster. Attended Sea Base and Northern Tier. Eagle Scouts Jacob B., Stephen L., John L., Ben M., Justin S., Tory D., Daniel E., Rene M., Jordon M., Jonathan F., Paul S., Michael B., David L., Lance H., Tommy S.

Troop 990 has attended many exciting activities, each of which represent a major lifetime achievement.

• Boy Scout National Jamborees in 1993, 1997, 2001 and 2005.
• Many Philmont treks, Northern Tier crews and Sea Base crews.
• Camped at Ben Delatour, Packard High Adventure Base and Spanish Peaks Scout camps in Colorado and Camp New Fork in Wyoming.
• Hiked the Weminuche Wilderness, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Big Bend National Park and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
• Climbed 14,000 foot peaks and rafted the Arkansas River in Colorado.
• Camped with Grupo 37, our brother Troop from Monterrey, Mexico in the Monterrey area twice and at Lost Pines once.
